Friends of the Verde River is proud to honor George Christianson with the Government Partner Award, part of our annual Heron Awards. George has worked extensively with us over the years, advising on our Watershed Report Card, helping organize MLK Day of Service, and leading educational hikes along the riparian area. During these hikes, participants looked for wildlife tracks, observed birds, and learned to identify native and invasive plant species.
About George Christianson

Born and raised in Prescott, Arizona, George has devoted his career to protecting the state’s natural treasures and inspiring others to do the same. After earning his Bachelor of Science in Zoology from Northern Arizona University, with an emphasis in Wildlife Management, he worked as a Wildland Firefighter and Fisheries Biologist with the U.S. Forest Service and completed a Pronghorn Antelope study with Arizona Game and Fish.
George began his Arizona State Parks career in 2000 and, in 2004, joined Dead Horse Ranch State Park in Cottonwood — a place that would define much of his professional life. Over nearly two decades there, including more than ten years as Park Manager, George became a cornerstone of the Verde Valley’s conservation community. His deep partnership with Friends of the Verde River and Verde Watershed Restoration Coalition strengthened the health and visibility of the Verde through collaborative restoration projects, educational outreach, and community events like Verde River Day and the Verde Valley Birding & Nature Festival.
When asked why he serves, he said, “I serve and protect because I enjoy helping people enjoy their outdoor experience. I love to share the time and talent I’ve been blessed with to teach people how to recreate safely and enjoyably, whether its kayaking, hiking, birdwatching or fishing. I especially enjoy serving the people of Arizona and out of state visitors wanting to experience the great parks of Arizona.”
In 2024, George was promoted to Chief of Operations for Arizona State Parks and Trails, where he now oversees statewide park management and initiatives that continue to benefit the state of Arizona, including the Verde River system with the acquisition of Del Rio Springs and the opening of Rockin’ River.
Whether leading river cleanups, mentoring youth, or paddling the waters himself, George’s passion and partnership have left an enduring mark on the Verde River and all who cherish it.
The Heron Awards
Each Heron Award is a beautiful, glass-blown work of art crafted by local artists at The Melting Point. These one-of-a-kind pieces symbolize our deep appreciation for those who help Friends of the Verde River protect and restore one of the Southwest’s last free-flowing rivers. They embody creativity, dedication, and the river’s enduring resilience.

We also take great pride in recognizing our partners and supporters during our annual gala, Fiesta de la Garza, where the community comes together to celebrate the people who make our work possible.
