As August dawns in earnest, the Verde Valley remains hot and sunny. Those of us bringing dogs along to our Verde River adventures should take special precautions to make sure our four-legged friends are safe in the heat!
Always bring more than enough water for yourself and your companions, human or otherwise. When it’s too hot, keep your pets at home, rather than risking heat stroke. Hot pavement and trail surfaces can injure puppy paws. Learn more about keeping dogs safe in hot weather here.
To protect sensitive habitat and wildlife (and other dogs!), always keep your dog leashed. While most bird species have finished nesting by this time of year, there are still many baby birds tucked away into the plants along the river banks. Keep them safe by leashing your dog when recreating on the Verde.
Thank you for keeping your dogs safe, and for protecting wildlife in the Verde Valley!
