Donor Advised Funds and IRA Rollovers are popular ways to make a lasting gift to support Friends of the Verde River. Friends will also accept gifts of real estate.
Donor Advised Fund
A donor advised fund (DAF) provides a flexible, philanthropic giving vehicle that provides attractive tax and administrative benefits to donors interested in maximizing their giving.
Distributions made to Friends of the Verde River through a donor advised fund may be put to the area of greatest need or designated to a specific program area: Habitat Restoration, Sustaining Flows, Community Stewardship.
Individual Retirement Account Charitable Rollovers
An IRA rollover enables you to transfer up to $100,000 per individual from your IRA, counting towards your required minimum distribution. The distribution comes directly from your IRA and will not count as taxable income. This can help to keep you in a lower tax bracket whether or not you itemize deductions.
- You must be 70 ½ years old or older by year-end.
- The transfer must go directly from your IRA administrator to Friends of the Verde River.
- You may transfer up to a total of $100,000 as an individual, and a married couple may give up to $200,000.
- Your transfer must be executed by June 30th in order to count in Friends of the Verde River’s giving total for that year – so it is wise to give your administrator a couple of weeks to make the transfer happen.
To make your gift, you need to contact your account custodian and follow their instructions.

Gifts of Real Estate
You can make a gift to Friends of the Verde River without touching your bank account – consider giving real estate, such as a personal residence, vacation home, farm, commercial property or undeveloped land. This form of generous giving helps us continue our work for years to come. A gift of real estate can also help you. When you give Friends of the Verde River appreciated property that you have held longer than one year, you may qualify for a federal income tax charitable deduction. You may be able to minimize or eliminate capital gains tax. As a bonus, you will no longer have to deal with that property’s maintenance costs, property taxes or insurance. You can also avoid the hassle of selling your real estate. You can deed the property directly to Friends, or ask your attorney to add a few sentences in your will or trust agreement.
Leave a Gift in Your Will or Living Trust
Leaving a legacy gift to Friends of the Verde River is simple! In as little as one sentence added to your will or trust, you can complete your gift. This type of donation to Friends in your will or living trust helps ensure that we can continue our mission for years to come.
Planning for the future and creating the legacy you wish to leave is one of the most effective ways to ensure a lasting impact. Making a gift in your will or living trust, known as a bequest, can guarantee that your legacy endures.
Your gift may be a specific dollar amount, a percentage of your estate, or the remainder after all other provisions are specified. Below is suggested language to take to your attorney for use in drafting your bequest.
For an unrestricted gift that allows Friends of the Verde River to determine how to use the funds based on the most pressing needs, use the following language for your will and/or trust:
“I give to Friends of the Verde River (EIN 45-2927355), a nonprofit corporation currently located at Cottonwood, Arizona, or its successor thereto, _________ [written amount or percentage of the estate or description of property] for its unrestricted charitable use and purpose.”
To designate your provision for a particular purpose:
“I give to Friends of the Verde River, a nonprofit corporation currently located at Cottonwood, Arizona, or its successor thereto, _________ [written amount or percentage of the estate or description of property]. This gift should be used for [state purpose] if and so long as Friends of the Verde River determines that the need exists. If Friends of the Verde River shall determine at the outset or at a later time that the need does not exist, or no longer exists or for some reason it is not possible (or prudent) to administer my gift as originally intended, then Friends of the Verde River may, in its sole and uncontrolled discretion, direct the use of my bequest for a purpose related as closely as possible to that stated above.”
If you have named Friends of the Verde River in your will or trust, please let us know so we can ensure that your gift is used according to your wishes. Notifying us of your plans enables us to plan for the use of your future gift. However, if you prefer to remain anonymous, we will keep your name and gift in strict confidence.

- IRAs and retirement plans
- Life insurance policies
- Donor advised funds
- Commercial annuities
To name Friends of the Verde River as a beneficiary, request a change-of-beneficiary form from your policy administrator, or complete the form on your provider’s website. Make your desired changes and return the form to establish your gift.
