Friends of the Verde River envisions a healthy, flowing Verde River and tributaries that support our natural environment, vibrant communities, and quality of life for future generations.

Friends has an expansive range of programs which include habitat improvement, channel restoration, flow restoration, and sustainable river recreation while continuing to engage the community through outreach and volunteer programs.

One for the goals of Friends of the Verde River is to have an economic impact on our community. We do this by using local vendors and employing local people.

Analyst/Public Outreach Assistant (AmeriCorps Position)

Location: Cottonwood, AZ | Reports To: Executive Director, David Gressly

Friends of the Verde River seeks an Analyst/Public Outreach Assistant to support the Executive Director and Board of Directors in advancing key Verde River conservation efforts. This role combines research and outreach—conducting analyses on topics like habitat restoration and water conservation while engaging community members to gather input that guides our work. Qualifications:

  • Technical degree preferred; basic understanding of watershed issues
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Willingness to travel within the watershed
  • 30+ hours/week preferred; hybrid work option

Restoration Assistant (AmeriCorps Position)

Location: Cottonwood, AZ | Reports To: Restoration Program Manager

This position will assist the Restoration program by supporting riparian invasive management, erosion reduction, water quality monitoring and wildlife corridor projects. This position would specifically support field-based crew work and community science efforts related to this program. Click here for the full job description.

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Support restoration projects including riparian invasive plant removal, upland restoration, water quality monitoring, and wildlife corridors.
  • Coordinate with volunteer community scientists and contract crews on projects including Otter Spotter, Bioblitz, bird surveys, vegetation monitoring and more.
  • Lead field trips of school age students and classroom follow up visits.
  • Assist in planning and coordination restoration volunteer events (MLK Day, Public Lands Day)
  • Lead environmental education for community members, field trips, tourists, etc.

30-hour plus work availability per week preferred. Workspace will be a combination of field based work with a hybrid office/ remote arrangement

River Friendly Living Program Assistant (AmeriCorps Position)

Location: Cottonwood, AZ | Reports To: Restoration Program Manager

This position will assist with river conservation efforts related to the River Friendly Living Program. They will develop educational materials for a broad range of constituents and lead participation in community outreach events, including tabling at local events, mixers, and other networking events. Major Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Represent Friends and the River Friendly Living program at local events
  • Development and distribution of communication materials for tabling events
  • Use strong communication skills to contact River Friendly Living participants
  • Preferred qualifications: B.S. degree preferred; familiarity with the Verde River
  • Watershed and water conservation principles, experience with Google
  • Workspace and Microsoft Office Suite

30-hour plus work availability per week preferred. Workspace is a hybrid office/remote arrangement.
